What is Chamomile Tea?

Chamomile tea is a fragrant beverage made from brewed chamomile petals. It is a popular drink in Europe and Northern Africa.

Chamomile is a flowering plant that is related to daisies, sunflowers and the infamous ragweed. It bears fragrant and attractive flowers, but is often treated as weeds because the plant tends to grow in open soils like farmlands.

The best chamomile tea is made from German Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla). It grows in Europe and temperate areas in North America and Australia.

How To Prepare Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea has fragrant apple-like scent with sweet floral tones that is relaxing to drink.

To make tea, 2 teaspoons of dried loose petals of the flower is steeped in a cup of water at 95C for 10-15 minutes.

Make sure to cover the cup to prevent release of volatile essential oils. Then before drinking, macerate soaked petals against the side of the cup to break down cell walls that contain bioactive compounds.

Chamomile petals are also great with green tea, black tea and other herbal teas. It tastes great with lemon and honey.
